Youth Program

Who we are

Our Youth Programs, funded by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and supported by grants like Indigenous Youth Roots and the Public Health Agency of Canada, empower youth aged 11 to 21 through diverse activities such as arts, education, advocacy, and health initiatives. Highlights include the Community Youth Network’s creative workshops and annual Haunted House event, the Indigenous Youth Roots Advocacy Circle, the SHIELD Project promoting sexual health conversations, and the Back to School Program providing essential supplies to K-12 students with support from the RBC Foundation and Telus Kits for Kids.

Community Youth Network

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Department of Families and Affordability funds Community Youth Network sites across our province. Our Community Youth Network site activities seek to support youth engagement, education and empowerment for young people from age 12 to 21. Our site has offered programming ranging from drum making and resume building to resin art and movie nights. Annually, youth take part in hosting a Haunted House experience open to the public. We are proud to have established partnership with 5 Wing Goose Bay to keep this community-favorite event thrillingly spooky each year!

Indigenous Youth Roots

Our Youth Programs team are recipients of Indigenous Youth Roots multi-year Creation Grant program. This fund supports our Youth Program Coordinator role. As part of our IYR Creation program our Centre will be developing a Youth Advocacy Circle to encourage Indigenous youth to develop confidence in advocating for causes important to them.

The SHIELD Project

SHIELD is an acronym for Sexual Health Information Exchange Labrador District. SHIELD is an HIV and Hep C Community Action Fund project funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada since 2017. SHIELD uses art, culture and technology themed events to create spaces for conversations about healthy relationships, sexual health and harm reduction. Our project strives to reach a key population of Indigenous youth from ages 11 to 24, and our SHIELD Project Facilitator operates a satellite site in Charlottetown, Labrador.

Back to School Program

Our Centre assists families with K-12 students with essential school supplies each year. Our Back to School program receives crucial funding for this program from the RBC Foundation. Additionally in 2025, the Labrador Friendship Centre was selected by the Town of Happy Valley Goose Bay to receive support through Telus Kits for Kids.
