Community Food bank
The Labrador Friendship Centre food back supports the Upper Lake Melville communities of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Northwest River, Sheshatshiu, and Mud Lake by providing no-cost groceries to people who face financial barriers in accessing basic grocery necessities. People can access the food bank once per every 30 days for standard grocery provisions. Groceries provided include canned items, dry goods, baking and cooking supplies, fresh fruits and vegetables, among other basic items. When available, the food bank strives to provide traditional foods such as berries and fish.
The Labrador Friendship Centre food bank reduces the barriers for its users by providing pick-up opportunities 3 days per week. LFC employees and volunteers fill the food bank orders based on the number of people in the family and take into consideration any allergies, dietary needs, and preferences if possible.
Rules Governing Food Assistance
- Assistance is provided once every 30 days
- Referrals for food assistance may be taken from healthcare or other professionals such as social workers, church minister, nurse, etc.
- Individuals must pick-up their own orders or written authorization must be provided if someone else is picking up.
- A Client Intake Form must be completed and include all individuals residing at the household. MCP numbers must be provided for children under the age of 18 years.
